I say that too and I scrabble around trying to find one only to find that by the time I've found one and got them there the mushroom or whatever has disappeared so then I say something very bad indeed :(.

I talk to my villagers all the time, both in VV1 and VV2. It's a good job I live alone because I would probably be put away if anyone heard me :).

I had one elderly Esteemed Elder. I just finished restoring him with the stew and thought that I'd go for one more round of breeding with him and he dropped dead right after the first kiss, so I said,

"At least HE went with a smile on his face!"

I picked up a tip from someone else on the forum, which works fantastically. You just pause the game with SPACEBAR, take your time to find a child, drag him/her over the item, and it will state "collecting blah blah...". Then once you unpause the game, the kid will kneel down and collect.

Careful, though -- the collectible or mushroom timer keeps running even when you pause, so you can't take too long to find the kid.
