I've got this game running on multiple computers and I'm kind of ticked that I didn't start keeping track of this earlier. Now, my method is to take the "unsafe" option each time. Drink it, eat it, open it, etc. I've noticed that people had different outcomes with the vials, red or blue. Once I started tracking them, I noticed they were different. So hence my next post to start tracking events and the decisions I chose. It would be great if we all started sharing.

I've been taken the "drink it, open it, etc." options also. Oily drinks are more often bad than non-oily. The crates have usually been useful. But I haven't yet chosen the "safe" option of leaving a crate alone.

The one where the whale got washed up ashore. Set it free causes the whale to go free and harvesting it gives you about 1500 food.

I have never gotton the whale in the 20 or so games I have played. I have learned to always throw back the badly weathered crates they always seem to contain rats. (Unless I want to thin out my population)
